*This year we translated the course offer to make it more accessible to a more diverse audience. Please note that currently most courses are held in English due to text availability. The discussions are mostly bilingual due to the language diversity in the class (between English only speakers, and Arabic and English speakers), and considering the relationship between familiarity of the language, and individual expression, in a learning process based on mutual exploration.

scheduling and pricing
- Thematic courses are open to visiting students who are not enrolled in CILAS' yearlong study programme in the liberal arts.
- In trimester two of the academic year 2016-2017, CILAS is offering twelve thematic courses listed below.
- Thematic courses are of a duration of ten weeks with two and half class hours per week.
- Thematic courses begin the week of January 15th and end the week of March 23rd.
- For further inquiry about the thematic course offer, do not hesitate to contact us.
scheduling and pricing
- Classes are scheduled both in the morning from 10am to 12:30pm and in the evening from 5:30pm to 8pm. Students are asked to commit to one of both Tracks depending on their time availability.
- Morning and evening classes discuss the same topic.
- Participants are required to attend 80% of scheduled classes.
- Thematic courses are chargeable at 1500 L.E.

What’s a monocultural society? Or for that matter a multicultural one? What is meant by ethnocentrism? Or for that matter by Eurocentrism?
This course invites you to explore your relationship with the (cultural) “Other”. Our exploration will climb two stages: you will be introduced to the basic theoretical frameworks and key elements that constitute Cross Cultural Communication and Intercultural Learning, followed by a survey of practical application.
It is often said that to be able to know the Other, we need to know ourselves first. We will study the topics of identity, self- and other-awareness, perception, and belonging: the age-old ”us” vs ”them” paradigm that inevitably leads to stereotypes and prejudice. The process of acculturation presents yet another major theme and will serve as a conceptual bridge to studying ethnocentrism.

في مجتمعاتنا التي يغلب عليها أحادية الثقافة، نتربى على أن "طريقتنا- في التفكير والفعل- هي أفضل طريقة"، هذا وإن وُجدت أصلاً طرق أخرى يقبلها المجتمع. هل يمكن لمثل هذا السلوك أن يصمد فى وجه عالم معولم؟ البداية من هنا، كم أصبحت القاهرة ذات ثقافة أحادية حقًا؟
يأتي هذا المساق إلى النور ليلقى الضوء على علاقاتنا مع "الآخر أو المختلف ثقاقياً " كقضية أساسية عند تقديم حقل الدراسات الثقافية المتداخلة. تنقسم رحلتنا إلى جزئيتين: تقديم أساسيات الإطار النظرى والمحاور الرئيسية التي تشكل التعلم المتداخل ثقافياً، متبوعة بالتطبيقات العملية.

In 2007 economist-philosopher Nassim N. Taleb, a former trader and risk analyst, published his Book The Black Swan: The Impact of the HIGHLY IMPROBABLE. In his book, Taleb is “skeptical about confirmation”. He explains the black swan logic as one that “makes what you don’t know far more relevant than what you do know”. Taleb’s Black Swans are events with three qualities: “rarity, extreme impact, and retrospective predictability”, his theory was received with, both, welcome and deride.
This course revolves around the theory of Black Swan Events. The course engages with the concept of an “event” while playing with Taleb’s Black Swans logic. Together we will raise questions, such as, why do we need to study events? What are different types of events? Asking questions like “why do we have the tendency to be drawn to what is not “seen”?”, we will uncover the role of the subconscious in our daily decisions, where a change of perspective and shifting of focus can lead to great discoveries about oneself and hence, others.

This course offers an overview of Palestinian literature, with a special focus on the Palestinian novel and its development since the second half of the 20th century. With the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, the brutal annihilation of the Palestinian people, their land and their collective memory began, resulting in a ‘nakba’ which saw the displacement of thousands of Palestinians. This course offers an overview of Palestinian literature, with a special focus on the Palestinian novel and its development since the second half of the 20th century. With the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, the brutal annihilation of the Palestinian people, their land and their collective memory began, resulting in a ‘nakba’ which saw the displacement of thousands of Palestinians. For their part, Palestinian novelists were adamant to write against these processes of uprootedness and erasure, employing storytelling as a tool of resistance against the Zionist settler-colonial project. يقدم المساق عرضًا للأدب الفلسطيني، مع تركيز خاص على الرواية الفلسطينية وتطورها في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين. منذ بدء التشتيت العنيف للشعب الفلسطيني وأرضه وذاكرته الجماعية مع تأسيس دولة إسرائيل في 1948 والذي أدى إلى نكبة تهجير آلاف الفلسطينيين، والروائيون الفلسطينيون من جانبهم يصرون على الكتابة ضد عمليات محو الذاكرة وتخريبها عن طريق توظيف الحكي كأداة للمقاومة ضد المشروع الإستيطاني الصهيوني، كما اشتبكوا مع وضعهم كلاجئين في المنافي، أو كأقلية جديدة داخل إسرائيل، أو كفلسطينيين يعيشون تحت الإحتلال الإسرائيلي في مناطق 1967.
تأتي الرواية الفلسطينية داخل ذلك السياق كي تقدم واحدة من أهم ثيماتها، وهي "الحفاظ على الذاكرة الفلسطينية الجماعية". لكن الكتاب الفلسطينيون، يشاركون بالتوازي في إلهام المقاومة
وتوثيق نضال الشعب الفلسطيني وصموده في مواجهة العدو الصيهوني مثلما يطرحون نقد للمجتمع الفلسطيني ذاته أكثر من مجرد كونهم يعيدون سرد القصص عن معنى الوطن.

Sound is ubiquitous. To evade the visual, we simply close our eyes, but to escape the sonic space is nearly impossible. Cairo is a thought-provoking sonic cacophony of an average of 87 decibels; a threatening threshold to the ear. How can we think the auditory of this city and how do we produce it, negotiate it and navigate it? The seminar is an invitation to think the world through the ear. What can we learn from sound? Using an eclectic combination of lectures, experiential learning and different modes of student participation, the course will attempt to attune the aesthetic, political and social through the modulations of the auditory.

Thinkers from different backgrounds have questioned the alleged universalism of social theory’s central philosophical orientations and categories — such as civil society, the state, modernity, right, citizenship, secularism, or even capitalism. It is claimed that the philosophical foundation of social theory in Enlightenment universalism is only European hegemony in disguise, the bedrock over which capitalist modernity in its different manifestations rests. This marks both an epistemological and political critique of social theory’s capacity of being genuinely global, inclusive and transformative.
