Overview
The Cairo Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences CILAS invites students from all walks of life to engage with the liberal arts through a pedagogy of discovery. CILAS hosts a dynamic, discussion-based learning environment conducive to creative inquiry, self-reflection, and civic engagement. Co-creation of knowledge at CILAS is fostered through classroom discussion and debate, workshops, musical performances, guest lectures, field visits, cooking, laughing, and listening.
- A core curriculum in the fields Historical Consciousness, Philosophical and Poetic Inquiry, and Ethnographic Study provides students with an intellectual foundation to engage in analytical discussions, creative inquiry, collaboration, and debate over the fall (first) semester.
- Thematic coursework emerging from the three fields of study encourages students to delve deeper into themes of their interest, and to test and transgress disciplinary boundaries during the spring (second) semester.
- Labs invites students to experiment and produce with translation, space, media and pedagogy.
- Students demonstrate their acquired competencies in an end-of-year exhibition open to the public.
