Language of instruction at CILAS is English, which shall enable students to have gained proficiency in the English language by the end of the programme.
Customised learning ensures that students are free to choose the thematic courses they are most interested in. CILAS requires its students to justify their course choice in a short written statement to their mentor.
Intellectual learning is exercised through Discussion Based Learning (DBL) - CILAS's core method of instruction. This method is employed in small tutorial groups. The method is based on a set of 'prompts' formulated by the faculty in written form, lectures and documentary films, and discussed by students. Every DBL tutorial a different student leads the class discussion in which he or she is assisted by a note taker while fellows serve as facilitators.
Experiential learning is emphasised through community service, and exposes students to practical and organisational challenges that they will have to work through as a volunteer. Learning outcomes from these direct experiences will be distilled in the form of reflective essays written at the end of each trimester.
Applied learning is exercised through capstone projects at the end of the second and third trimester, during which students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their acquired competencies.
The mentorship programme guarantees regular exchange between students and the fellows regarding course choice, assistance with study material and language difficulties, amongst other things.
