learning method
CILAS uses Discussion Based Learning (DBL) as its main learning method. DBL upholds a pedagogy of collective discovery and attunement rather than a pedagogy of mastery. This is to say that students and fellows discover new things together instead of having fellows feed students a master-narrative or lecture them. A pedagogy of discovery and attunement recognises that the process of knowing is fundamentally socio-emotional. DBL divides in-class discussions into Pre- and Post-Discussion which are bridged by a week of individual study.

core curriculum
the core curriculum is offered in the fall semester and invites students to contemplate and discuss theories and methods, concerns and inconsistencies, and entanglements, and paradoxes. The core courses seek to develop Historical Consciousness, engage in Philosophical and Poetic Inquiry, and introduce Ethnographic Study. Students are invited to be in conversation with interlocutors from across historical periods, hemispheres and sites of contestation about what it means to record history, build community, or question one's predicament; how meaning is produced through language and art; how we come to know and which rules we devise to organise ourselves. The core curriculum seeks to develop the habits of mind conducive to the pursuit of one's intellectual curiosities.

thematic courses
thematic courses are offered during the spring semester. They are of a duration of twelve weeks and take place once a week between Saturday and Tuesday in the morning from 10 am to 12:30 pm and in the evening from 5:30 pm to 8pm, respectively. Thematic courses emerge from the three fields of study - Historical Consciousness, Philosophical and Poetic Inquiry, and Ethnographic Study. Thematic courses relate and seek to respond to the concerns and inquiries of students and are open to visiting students. CILAS reserves eight places for visiting students per thematic course. The courses are hosted on CILAS' Rooftop open-air and on-line.
